![]() Snow Patrol were regularly dismissed by critics as a poor man’s Coldplay, which was particularly insulting given that Coldplay were regularly dismissed as a poor man’s Radiohead. It was an early hit for Snow Patrol, a group of scruffy Scottish and Northern Irish 30-something indie rockers who had been knocking around for over a decade. The title phrase flits by just once in a sketchy lyric about being with someone you love: “Let’s waste time chasing cars around our heads.” It makes me think of dogs running down the road barking pointlessly at passing motorists, which is hardly a romantic image.Ĭhasing Cars was released in 2006. It is an odd little song, that somehow shifts from melancholy ballad to soaring anthem. Actually, is there even a chorus? I’m not sure. The plaintive melody remains the same from beginning to end, with no discernible separation between verse and chorus. It’s got just three chords (A, G# and D), cycling around a repetitive two note motif, set to a plodding mid-tempo beat. It is news that provokes so many questions, not least: how does it go again? Is this really the anthem of our age? Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol has been declared the most played song on British radio in the 21st Century (so far).
